Running your propane Refrigerators while traveling?

I never worry about propane on. Never.
I always run with it on, fridge never gets shut off.

More than once I have forgotten to shut the furnace and HWT off. 100 miles later I stop and oops! Forgot again! No big deal, I turn it off then. TT was nice and warm!

I was once traveling with fridge running on a 69 Prowler single axle.
Catastrophic tire failure went unnoticed. Steel belted radial totally shredded everything in its path including the bottom of the fridge and gas lines feeding it. Tore them wide open. Lines were hanging out the bottom...
Propane tank has a built in safety feature that shuts off the gas in the event of a sudden change in the flow. It did its job, no fire.

TT was a write off.

Eight motorhomes and 33 years of traveling and I always leave the fridge running on propane. Never had a problem.

I was initially very skeptical of running the fridge on LP, but now I'm a solid convert. My only caution is to beware when refueling that my fridge is far enough back from the pumps. When I look at where the fridge is in relation to the pumps its a solid 20-25' away minimum so I feel there is no issue.

it is dangerous. by far one of the worst things you can do. I know I will get all kinds of flax from saying that but it is true. RV educating 101 guy says no don't do it. the RV Doctor says don't do it. I fought fires for 30 years and I can honestly tell you I have been on fires started by rv fridges that were running while traveling. One guy who owns a truck dealership built a super class C and he made it 30 miles before his Super C burned up. a group of band members were coming through the country side and their C class burned up. a woman who's relatives in a class A burned up with in 20 miles of our town. a gas station we had was leveled in a fire caused by a guy who thought he turned off his fridge before he fueled up started a beaut of a fire almost blowing up half the town but we stopped it before it got to the 10,000 gallon propane tank next to it. yes many on here have been lucky, pure lucky that they haven't lost their RV's or burned a service station to the ground, and that doesn't make it right. I have learned fro ours mistakes and I use reusable ice packs to keep my fridge cold and when I get to camp I refreeze the packs and use them over and over again. but it's up to you what you do. one guy a few years ago said that is why he has insurance. I just hope you are not next to me when it happens

I have two career firemen in my neighborhood - both of them captains with many years of experience. One is now retired.
I asked them about this and neither one of them HAD EVER SEEN AN RV FIRE BECAUSE OF A FRIDGE. NEVER.
The vast majortiy were started in the eng compartment and some from brakes.

I've been RVing for nearly 30 years. Met lots of people and not one has ever had a fire because of the fridge.
I feel 100% safe running with it on and camping next to the tens of millions of others who safely do the same.

One old dottering foul SPRAYED the fridge lower vent cover with the gas nozzle cause he messed up...that started the fire.
NOT 'traveling' with his fridge ON
Spray a flammable fuel onto an open flame and WHOOSH

But that has NOTHING to do with using the RV Propane System as designed with in transit.

Safe or not I turn mine off when travelling. It is no different than when the power goes out at my house. The fridge is fine if you leave it closed for a few hours without power.

I'm pretty sure you're statistically in way, way more danger from food born illness from food allowed to get above 40F than from the RV fridge flame.

I run the fridge on 12V while traveling then switch to propane when parked to conserve the house battery. My late DW liked having hot water during the day so I left the gas on although it had to be shut off while crossing on ferries.

20 years, 500,000 miles. Never shut the refrigerator off, never caught fire.
