Rusty Hitch

Hi. I'm a relatively new RV'er with a less than 1 year old TT. On the way home from Florida, approximately 250 miles into trip it started to rain and when I stopped for gas, i noticed a grinding noise every time I turned, especially noticeable at lower speeds.
When I got home and unhitched, i inspected the hitch and it is pretty rusty underneath.
Is there a particular brand of grease i should be using?
Is there a way to remove the accumulated rust?
Any other suggestions?

Surprised...

Why type of hitch do you have? Do you have an anti-sway bar? Our anti-sway bar grinds and moans like crazy when turning while towing in the rain.

X2, on many hitches, the noise is normal. I have the Equalizer brand and it can be a pretty noisy hitch at times.

  • It also depends on what type hitch you have. Could be that some grinding is just the nature of the beast.
  • excellent. Thank you. I did not expect to see rust there. It's just surface rust si I'm not worried about structure but the grinding has to stop.
  • Are you talking about the inside of the coupler itself? I just use a bit of lithium grease on the ball before dropping the trailer down on it. As for the rust, you can probably just use a bit of sandpaper on it, then maybe hit it with some spray paint.
