There is a particular thrill to sliding into a rental car by the dawn's early light, after an all night flight in cattle class, and setting off on the other side of the road. I know, I've done it many times! :E
That said, driving in the UK and Ireland isn't that hard, millions of folks do it every day. You will notice, however, that lots of roads are narrow and, what is worse, tend to be edged with stone walls or high hedges. Your steering skills will get better. Fast.
Lots of Americans take their RV's to Europe or rent. (Seabridge even has a calculator so you can compute the ship vs. rent break even point.)
