RV / Caravan rental and use in the UK.

Planning a trip to the UK in July for 5 weeks. Plane is booked and landing at Gatwick July 1.
Has anyone rented an RV in the UK and toured England, Scotland and Wales (maybe Ireland)?and what advise do you have?
For those of you living in the UK is it easy to get around and also find camping?

We are just trying to put together a plan
1. rent a car and do bed and breakfasts or hotels
2. rent a caravan and do as we do here - travel and camp where we can - no reservations
3. bus, train, walk, etc and find places to stay as needed

We normally spend 6-10 weeks travelling in our TC during the summer.

Thanks
  • Thanks,
1 week motorcycle rental is the same as the cheapest 4 week car rental and DW hates twisty roads on the motorcycle.
The caravans we have seen for rent are either really small (smaller than when we camped out of a 87 Toyota LE van) or large and expensive.

Most likely we will go with B&Bs.
  • Google for: UK caravan rental
RV's are known as caravans in the UK
A "static" caravan is a park model or trailer home type of rental.
Do a few searches using those terms and you should come up with some good answers.
    (They speak English over there.)
  • If you've never camped in the UK then be prepared for some major differences to camping in the US. I used to camp a lot and essentially don't expect much.... Campgrounds are usually only a field with (if your lucky) a water
spigot. Usually there are no facilities like we are used to in the US.
I'm sure they are around but I never stayed at "full facility" campgrounds and if you choose to stay in remote areas then "rustic" would be a good description. Not to rain on your parade - but you may be disappointed.

My info is 30 years old, so things may have changed but when I was there 3 years ago - it did not seem to have changed much. Also expect any motorhome that you hire to be really cramped by US standard. I don't think I ever saw a with slide-outs.

Camping in Spain was totally different - the places I stayed at were closer to what we are used to.

  • Triumph motorcycles and B&B's / seaside hotels / castles... :)

Herding a lard a$$ RV about the country would be a terrible waste of a zillion miles of twisty roads :)

but seriously - Google "rv rental UK" and lots of companies come up that offer rv hire.
  • I have toured the UK a few times and I can tell you the camping experience there is considerably different than here. And with the number of quaint towns with what we call B&B's, I would not even consider camping!
  • About 10 years ago we did a road trip through England and Scotland. We did B&Bs in most places. It was great.
