handye9, I am disappointed that you, and so many others, have so much disdain for dealers. Dealers are composed of people, most of whom are very similar to you and me.
You cited some of the reasons pricing differs between dealers. Then you go and say some have higher prices due to greed. Who defines greed?
Some person, or group of people, put their names(s) on the line to start the dealership. They took the risk, so they could make a living selling something they enjoyed. They secured the property, made agreements with different manufacturers, got all the permits, etc. They took out loans for the inventory, so there is more risk.
Salespeople and service technicians were hired. Some are very good, some are clueless, and the rest are in-between. Who you get when you go in to look for a unit is up for grabs. If you get a very good salesman, he/she can answer your questions truthfully. If you get someone who is in the middle, they may tell you they will get the answer. Get one of the clueless, and yes, they may make up something.
You find a model you like, so you negotiate. Maybe you are a great negotiator, it's the end of the day on Saturday, and the dealership wants to make a sale. They sell you something for $100 over their cost, just to get it off the floorplan (financing of units). They sure can't stay in business if they make that on every unit.
So, I come in, find a unit, ask the price. I get told a high price, and negotiate down to what I feel is fair, whatever that may be. Maybe I am comfortable paying $1,000 more than you did. So, the dealer makes the deal. Did I get ripped-off? No. I paid what I felt was fair. For someone to call the dealer a stealer is unfair. Both sides have to agree to a price for a deal to happen. No one is forced to purchase a unit at the price the dealer presents.
Dealers have to make money to stay in business, which gives us all another place to look at trailers. Don't bash them because some customers pay more than others. That is how some people can get a better price than others. Just the luck of timing, and the negotiating prowess of some people.
Sorry for the rant, but you would not like it if someone called you greedy (or worse) if you took an advancement in rank that they felt you didn't deserve. Just as those of us employed by someone don't feel we are greedy when we ask for a raise, based on what we feel is above-average work. We all want to increase our income, so don't bash dealers for trying to make a buck. Again, it takes two sides to agree on a price to make a deal.
