We dread and detest with a passion when it comes time to negotiate on autos and RVs with dealers (furniture & white goods are not much better when buying). It always starts with the "dance of the seven veils" as I call it, hubby calls it "the fan dance", with them going back and forth and got to ask their manager, and put your offer in writing what "you" want to pay, and it just gets very stressful for us, maybe others love it but we just don't.
The minute most (admittedly not all) open their mouths we wonder what lies or deceit about "we're letting it go at just over our cost/invoice" and so on are going to tumble out next. No mention of the additional monies they get based on volumes, or clearance promos they get from the manufacturers.
To each their own, but we look for guidance from other experienced non-selling fellow RVers, and in some of the websites recommended above so we get a bit of a ball park, when buying a specific RV. We then approach various dealers with our detailed spec and ask them for their no dickering bottom line price. Which of course they rarely give from the off, but eventually we find one that makes sense (not always the very very lowest but makes sense and we feel comfortable with)
Then we thank them go to leave, and they ask for our contact info. We refuse and say, we asked for your bottom line price you gave it to us, what else at this juncture is there to discuss? Of course then comes the "urgency" reasons as to why and more reasons.
They know their costs, they know their overhead, darn it, they know exactly what their bottom line is. Just for our sanity give us that darn figure from the start and avoid all this unnecessary time consuming and very annoying back and forth umpteen times ritual you all like to do.
FWIW, that's just how we feel about the whole process, and we've bought F350's in a neighbouring province to the East over the phone and our current RV in the neighbouring province to the west over the phone and with a trade in via email photos. Locally they either didn't know the floorpans truly available and tried to convince us to buy what was on their lot (not listening or caring what we said we want) or they thought they'd try it on, hoping to go in rubbing their hands when we left. Met one dealership that recognized us a couple years later at an RV show and when found out they'd lost the deal on our first fiver to a competitor, angrily commented "we should never of lost that deal for 'x' amount". We shrugged our shoulders and repeated "we asked you for your bottom line price, you gave it to us, we didn't like it".
Of course it's not all about price alone, and we may go with the second or third from cheapest if we feel more confidence in the salesperson/dealership than the lower ones, but we are not prepared to pay thousands in difference or play silly games with them. To each their own as I know odd guys tell us they enjoy this process and do it every couple of years or more on occasion, it's just not for us and how we roll.
