Going back to your original question, there are two reasons I carry the "safe to use white hoses". First and the most important is the DW expects it and because she expects it, she gets it. Second is I got one from the first owner of our first rig and I like the flat, easy to coil hoses.
Do I think you should do the same, no. Do what makes you and your family happy. I have no proof, none whatsoever, that the plastics in the garden hoses from most stores are dangerous, however, there is a lot of proof that some of them make the water taste really bad.
Just remember that the folks who are so worried about some poisonous chemical in the hose will leach out and kill or in someway harm you, are using hose bibs that may (read that as "most likely" contain lead) to connect their water hoses to the water system.
