Our 22 year old 5th wheel has a free standing dining table with 4 chairs. We have towed this 5th wheel across the country and back, over dirt roads to offroad races, on good and bad roads.... we do not strap down the table or chairs. Once in a while one or two of the chairs will move during travel. None have fallen over.
The carpet doesn't show any more wear than other areas of carpet. It's not difficult to get into either inside chair, just slide from the outside chair to the inside chair. Most of the time we put the table in the middle of the floor. Because we added one of these desks:

Which has turned out to be a great add on.
