Not really, they are a retailer that operates with small margins due to the economy of scale. A wholesaler does not sell to the end buyer.

What RV are you looking at purchasing?

I have a friend that bought from RVWholesalers and had a fine experience. He drove to Ohio to pick it up and it was as described, no hidden fees or anything. He agreed to the price, with all taxes, PDI, etc included before he drove out there.

But this was his first camper and he had no trade in. They are wholesalers, so they are going to low ball the heck out of you on a trade in. Furthermore, they know that if you hauled your camper all the way to Ohio then are at their mercy. You can't tow BOTH trailers home, so they know that they hold the upper hand on a trade. You will have invested good money and time into towing your old rig out there and will invest MORE money and time into hauling it hack home, plus you won't get the shiny new trailer. All that equates to them holding all the negotiating power.

Based upon that, I think you are better off trying to negotiate a better price from your local dealer. Check your other thread, I highly recommend Keystone Mega RV which is a little over an hour from you. They have a wide selection of makes/models and really competitive pricing. Again, they are wholesalers too so they don't want your used camper and will probably give you a lower price than you want.

If you can afford it and have a place to store it over the winter, I would suggest you consider keeping your current trailer and offering it for sale locally in the spring. The market will get higher in February/March as people in the mid-Atlantic start thawing out and considering vacation options for the year. I sold my old trailer on Craigslist relatively quickly. It made it super easy to negotiate my new trailer without worrying about the "trade in balloon" effect.

Ok.. so, if it is competitive interest rates, then refi after a year, or stick with them.

If the rates are competitive, does it really matter that the dealer gets a little something in return for the financing?

The financing deal requires a minimum of one year before payoff. The dealer requires the financing to get the lower price. They then suggest you pay all but minimal amount as soon as possible, then pay the rest over the next 11 months to avoid finance charges. To me this is a shady deal.

Yup... if the lower price is contingent upon accepting their financing, just refinance it after you get home.

So, if you receive less from RVWholesalers on your trade, but they drop the price of the new trailer by $4k, your savings is something less than $4K. Is it worth it to canx the deal you already made?

RVWholesalers will only pay 'wholesale' for your trade as well. I was close to making a deal with them about a year ago. Used their offer to get a tad more trade in on my trade, and drop a tad bit on the new unit. Net was RVWholesalers still would have been cheaper, by about $1500. At the end it wasn't worth the round trip drive and hassle for that.

No matter what dealer is in question you will always find those who have good and bad experiences. Clearly, Ralph had a bad one. We are the other side of the coin. We have bought two units from them, both long distance (once from MI and once from MA) and had a perfectly acceptable experience both times (including the second which included a site-unseen allowance for our trade). Arrangements were as stated and the process flowed as expected both times.

As far as the service/warranty issue, you will find endless threads debating that issue with, once again, people on both sides of the argument. For us, I knew that I would do the vast majority of the repairs (in fact, In 8+ seasons of ownership the only time I had a trailer in for service was for new tires), so I wasn't too concerned.

Decide what your priorities are, know what you are gaining/sacrificing in each, and make your choice. For us, the $7k we saved on a $35k unit was worth the hassle, for others the savings might be less (either in quantity or relative value).

That would depend on your definition of good reputation. I made a deal on a new 2010 over the phone and web, worked out all the particulars. The sales person I was dealing with was aware I was bringing $5K cash and a check for the balance from my credit union. He was the one who told me the total. A date was setup for the PDI and delivery. When we arrived the salesman I had dealt with was not there, and the numbers had all changed. I was told it was because we were not using their financing, which was never discussed at all. I eventually talked with the owner who would not come off his position. He said his sales person did not have the authority to have made the deal he made, all of which I had in emails. I asked why he had him making deals in that case which was answered with gibberish and him hawing. They don't have a good reputation here LOL.
