The Ford was eliminated because I just didn't care for the overall feel of the truck and the lack of the tech features the RAM had.
I will agree with the last paragraph though too - numbers on paper mean less when the rubber meets the road. The actual performance is pretty close.
You just answered the question to why the horsepower war. It seems to be a recurring theme here for some; "I would rather have better fuel economy than more HP". But the reality is, power speaks in marketing. Maybe the lower HP truck would actually be better if mated to a better trans or power curve. I don't know, but if there are enough consumers eliminating an option because it did not make the first cut this trend will continue. I am not saying it is wrong or someone is wrong using this method. Only it is a reality in the way we evaluate our purchases.
