Depending on how much you will tow, you may not need the diesel. I would say anything under 7500 lbs even through steep mountain passes will be comfortable with gas. You will start seeing the benefit of diesel at heavier tow weights or at higher elevations where the turbo will help it breathe.
2005, Ford upgraded the chassis, suspension and brakes in their trucks (the reason they went to 17" minimum rim size). If you choose the Ford and want a more capable towing platform, go with a 2005 or newer.
