As you may be realizing about now.... The tow rating is just an advertising number. By the time you read all of the fine print, and take into account all of the take aways from that number.... You will be quite a bit under that.
I irony of it, is that this affects the smaller tow vehicles more than the larger ones.
3000# dry is a number I would feel comfortable with.... As already mentioned, wind resistance, measured as frontal area is a big limiting factor for the smaller tow vehicles. I has nothing to do with weight,,,but you need to know your figure on this and stay under it.
