Selling Trailer

Wife and I own TT. We are thinking about selling it and would be interested in your thoughts about selling it to a dealer vs selling on our own.

Not set yet, but my take a year or two off and then purchase when we finally retire.

Thanks.
  • I had mine for sale for two years before someone fell in love with it. I got what I asked for too. just have to be patient. and she paid cash. had me worried carrying that much money around all weekend.
  • Dealers make more money selling new units plus they make more from the factory warranty work. It may languish on their lot forever, or at least for a very long time. You sure don't want that if you need the cash for the next TT.

A dealer will want to price it at the blue book value no matter how much you've upgraded it or if it is in pristine shape. I would sell privately but the question is where to list it. There are consignment lots that sell just used RVs, but I don't know if they are any good.

We sold a previous TT to my BIL who got the benefit of several thousand $$ in mods and upgrades but we couldn't get more than what it was worth on the open market. We had no bites on CL after several months which was getting discouraging.
  • Trying to sell without buying one from a dealer will likely result in getting a lowball price.

Are there are also places that sell on consignment?
  • Mine sold after just 2 weeks on Craigslist. There were several lookers before the right person came along. It just takes some time and patience, and I'm sure I got several thousand more than a dealer would have offered.
  • See this thread for information on RvTrader.com. Most report selling quickly. Craigslist is a free option, but you sometimes have to put up with scammers.
  • Agreed - try selling it yourself first. When creating your ad, look at other ads to see what looks good. It amazes me how terrible most ads are in terms of pictures and description. Most ads only allow a few pictures, so I would state in the ad to contact you for more and higher resolution pictures. I would then create a separate PDF/Word document that has a more detailed description of the RV with A LOT of pictures. That way, when someone contacts you, you don't have to recreate the wheel every time in responding.
  • I have sold two trailers advertising them my self.

The sales went fairly quick and the new owners were happy when they departed because I explained how every thing worked and gave them my maintenance log.

However, I did receive the phone call from Montana from a guy who wanted to purchase one of the Trailers. His trusted agent would be in the area for the pick up. He would write the check for $1,000.00 over asking price in case there would be any last minutes charges. I could then refund the left over amount to the agent. Told him that sounds good and I gave the address of the Sheriffs sub station for pick up.:B

Just keep in mind there will be no chance of problems with Cash payment.

  • X2, dealer will low ball you. Best time to sell is in spring when people get the "itch", so if you can wait until then you'll get the most for it.
  • I think you will take it in the shorts if you sell through a dealer. If you aren't in a hurry I would do yourself. I have heard of people selling there RVs fairly quickly using Craigslist and RV Trader. It is more of hassle but you will come out more financially ahead doing it yourself.
