Until they get 'honest about weights, there will always be issues.
IMO, each and every unit needs to be individually weighed after it's built and that weight is what needs to be on the specification sticker. That way, when shopping for a unit you can look at it and be 'informed' right away.
I don't think it would make much difference. Most "1/2 ton" TCs have fantasy/dry weights that exceed the numbers on the yellow payload tags on 1/2 ton pickups now. Most "3/4 ton" TCs have fantasy/dry weights that exceed the numbers on the yellow payload tags of 3/4 ton pickups now. Putting their real (i.e. heavier) weights on the tags won't change things.
