Do you have the correct size trailer ball? They come in 1 7/8", 2" 2 5/16". If your ball is to small there will be play. Also, even iff the ball is correct if the coupler is not adjusted there could be play. There is usually a nut underneath that adjusts how tight the movable part is when closed.
