GordonThree is on the right track. Some inverters have a switched neutral/ground bonding relay. If that inverter bond relay is active the GFI will see a neutral/ground bond on the load side of the GFI and that will cause it to trip. Can't say specifically how to resolve it as all installations have variations but that's where I'd start looking. Get out the inverter manual and it should provide some information regarding neutral/ground bonding.
