Short bed or standard bed?

I am going to purchase a new truck very soon and am trying to decide on a short bed or a standard bed Silverado 1500. The standard bed truck's wheelbase is about 10 inches longer. I'd really like to have the 6.2, but will probably go with the 5.3 because of cost. You can see what I tow in my signature line.

I would go with a std 8' bed! nothing shorter, longer is better!

No crew cab with the 8' bed on a half ton.

As to the question about fuel tanks, sadly GM only does 26 gallons in the half ton unless you go with a regular cab 8' bed in which case you get 34.

  • I have never regretted a 6 1/2' bed. I prefer the longer wheelbase and more room.

    Good luck,

What is the fuel tank size for both the 5.5 ft and 6.5 ft beds? If there is a diff, get the larger one. Also, the 6.5 ft bed will carry more stuff.
I would agree with this. I would make sure it had the largest fuel tank. If the wheelbase is longer it will ride and tow better, the tradeoff is harder to maneuver and parking.
  • I have had them all and prefer a long bed, then short bed then extra short. The extra short bed is nice for parking but can't hold much. I couldn't even put my dirt bike in there with the tail gate closed lol.

I've got the 6'4" in my Ram and it works well overall, even with the fiver. There have been some situations where a long bed would be better, but it's my daily driver and I am frequently in tight parking lots and garages and the short bed plays much better in that setting. It's a compromise either way.

It's too bad GM only puts the 6.2 in their high trim trucks.
  • Standard bed is nice for the extra storage. Short bed is easier to maneuver around town and parking lots. So depends on where you live and what type of driving/towing you'll be doing.
  • My thinking, it is a Short Bed or Shorter than Short bed. I love my 6.4' bed on my Ram. I couldn't do a 5.7' bed.
