I use 4lo with my F150 when backing the trailer in at the house. I don't disconnect the front axle, because I actually need the traction from the front wheels to get up and over the curb and then the rear tires hit the gravel on the driveway (steep) and at that point, I usually lose traction on the rear end.
By the time I'm doing any lock to lock steering, the front end is on the gravel as well, so for me, this works without the binding.. I do have to turn the wheel some before that, but not enough to cause issue and I'm using very little throttle anyway.
