Should 2 Wheel Drive Low Range be a option??

While visiting a local hilly campground I had finished my visit and was heading to the clean out. The location of the cleanout was up a steep incline and around a bend on pavement. I had to decide to pull in 2HI and strain my transmission or choose 4LOW and risk damaging my front axle. Who else thinks trucks should offer 2 wheel drive low range as a option??

  • Nothing said aboot a locked rear end!!! Shouldn't enter into the equation!

OP, welcome to forum!!! What are driving?? Don't see anything in your profile. If a Ford, and have the auto vacuum hubs, there is a modification that can be done to engage 4W lo without the hubs activating. There may be something like that for other mfgs system, I don't know.
  • I remember years ago that was an option. I had an 84 3500 SRW with a 6.2L in it. There were times when I needed the lower gear ration, not necessarily 4 X4 low. I could just not lock in the front hubs and have access to the lower gear ratio without being in 4X4. However now days with all the power these newer pickups have I don't think it is necessary.
  • I'd sure ike to have it but manufacturers just dont get how convenient this wold be for those of us that have to back up trailers.
  • That wouldn't really solve the problem because 2WD with a locked rear axle would scrub too. Less, for sure, but it still would.
