Should I be concerned? (tire question)

Our Jayco came factory with Duro 185/80D13 bias tires rated at 1660 lbs at 65 PSI. I recently purchased 185/80R13 Load C Maxxis M8008 Radial tires rated at 1480 at 50 PSI. Should I be concerned?

  • BurbMan, that was my line of thought. I'm still under the load limit, but will take your advice of weighing the loaded trailer just for peace of mind. The new tires are radial vs. bias, so there should be some improvement, correct?

PackerBacker, when I searched online for 185/80/13 tires, the Maxxis appeared in the search engine in several places and seemed highly rated. Most websites did not specify the Load Range since Maxxis only manufactures that size in a C Load Range. I obviously failed to be more detailed in my search and assumed that all 185/80/13 were of the same load/quality tire. Upon arrival, I immediately noticed the difference.

Lantley, I really like the ST tires that came factory on my 2008 Jayco. I'm still running the factory Duro tires which are now 6 years old and have 4/32 tread depth. I've never had a flat tire or blowout with these tires. We are going to make one more trip next week (500 mile round trip) before swapping out to the Maxxis tires.
  • You will be fine!

Yes, the GVWR of the rig is 4,750 BUT you have 4 tires... so 4 x 1480 = 5920, you have more than enough tires to carry your fully loaded trailer even though they are not rated as highly as the bias ply that came from OEM. To be safe, next time you are out traveling with the trailer loaded, gas up at a Pilot or Loves and take a qucik trip across the scales to see what your TT tires are carrying.

Yes, you should be concerned going down a load range. Typically folks want to go up a load range if possible.

Curious as to why you would buy C rated tires when there are D's on it? :h
  • The GVWR of your rig is 4,750 lbs. your new tires can only handle 2,960 lbs. Your dry tongue weight is 375 lbs.

    You should be concerned.

  • Yes you should be concerned. ST tires are problematic enough when using the correct size tire. Using an underrated ST tires is just asking for trouble.
  • How much does the trailer weigh? My first impression is it was not a wise decision.
