Shudder

Got Synthetic in it

x2 on the U-joints.

Ford said 30k on my trans. I've since upgraded to Mercon-v which is synthetic and now go 100k between fluid changes. Coming up on 358,000 and still shifts like new.

The "shudder" is obviously from another point.

You guys sparked my curiosity so I checked my new Ford Manual. It says change the tranny fluid and filter at 60K for a 5 speed and 150K for a 6 speed. Wow! That's insane. I guess I need to talk to my service advisor. I don't think 30K is an unreasonable increment, maybe less if he truck gets a lot of rigorous towing, which mine doesn't. Maybe that's the recommendation for a grocery getter.
My manual also says 7500 for oil and filter and even with light towing, that's to much in my opinion, even for a gasser. Mine gets done at 5k on everything I own. Personally, I don't think it matters if you use synthetic oil, it still needs to be changed.

In most cases once you have transmission symptoms or abnormal behavior the damage is already done. A flush or service may help but the idea is not to let it get to that state. IMO even 30k is too long. Fluid should come out in a transmission service like it went in with no discolor, clean, with no sign of oxidation or being burnt from heat. If it does not look like this or is burnt, discolored and oxidized the damage/wear has already happened. If you work a truck and tow like most of us with RV’s you should be changing fluid in most cases every 15-20 k with 20 as the max. I personally change transmission fluid at 15k in all my vehicles. I know many will say this is over kill and many times they are the same folks that wait for the abnormal performance or in this case a “shutter” as a reminder to service their vehicle. Like all things mechanical the most cared for transmission can fail at any point in its life. In most cases if you cut the recommended intervals in half you will wear out the rest of the vehicle long before the drive train. A happy transmission is one that is filled with like new fluid its entire life. Every 30 k is recommended for normal driving. Towing an RV is exempt from this.

WEll Let's see. It was done at 30K, and now it has 60K on it. The mileage that Ford says to do it at.
Now IF you had read and understood my original post. Which evidently you didn't. You would know that I said it IS time to do it again.

Please read and understand what you read BEFORE telling me I don't take care of my truck.
You can only hope that your truck is in as good a condition as mine when it gets to the same age. And that's doubtful.

OUCH. By the way my trucks manual says don't do any routine maintenance on the transmission.
