I have been advised by 2 random businessman while traveling on Highway 395 to expect DOT to pull me over.
Due to the utility body? or the size of the truck? Was this camper on or off when they offered that advice?
There is clearly rampant disregard for these laws, not objecting to that just an observation. Almost any new 3/4 or 1T, certainly crew cabs and duallys, are greater than 11,500 GVWR and greater than 8001 empty. In California, it's not a pickup, and not exempt from anything by the letter of the law. All of these are supposed to have weight tags on each door. I almost never see that and I've looked, they are quite visible if present. Either the owners are throwing the tags away, or have them registered without full compliance. This doesn't offend me, but it would be nice to have clarity so you'd know you won't be stopped and the truck impounded on the spot in the middle of a camping trip with the wife and cat in the truck, which is legally possible. I'd like them to either enforce it, say they aren't going to enforce it, or change the law.
