Due to the utility body? or the size of the truck? Was this camper on or off when they offered that advice?
The first warning came from a propane company down by Lone Pine. He was working on our fridge and commented on the truck and utility body. He cautioned that his drivers are pulled over often for every vehicle compliance known.
The other was getting fuel and a local hardware/lumber driver commented on the truck and utility body. It was the new decal on the door certifying the registered weight that drew his attention.
I had a local competitor tell me he has to carry copies of workman's comp for his drivers in case they are pulled over.
Finally while at the Sportsman Expo a couple weekends ago, a truck camper dealer had a Ram 3500 with a small side entry camper mounted on an aluminum flat bed. He said as of 30 days ago, he is required to stop at scales and also keep an electronic log book. There is signage on his truck and he obviously is "not for hire".
I understand the confusion and have witnessed the bad advice given over the counter or phone while working with the Ca DMV just getting my truck registered. I drive about 25,000 miles a year just for business and see DOT checkpoints at a couple known points. I think these are the guys that are the most knowledgeable of code and enforcement.
