I have a friend who was installing 'side impact' bars on imported Ferrari's and Mercedes Benz cars (grey market) back in the early 80's.
What is so new? So that the door will not be punctured by a tree limb trying to get inside?
Door impact resistance has been standard in US cars for at least 30 years, so that a bumper striking side of the car, such as in a red light runner case, the bumper would not tear through the door.
