The UN has been regulating vehicle standards for the rest of the world for well over 50 years now. Over here in the US and Canada, we're self regulated and always have been. We're regulated by FMVSS and CMVSS for Canada which is almost a carbon copy of FMVSS. We may adopt some of the UN's minimum regulations, but often time we already have our own version on the books. We do not recognize UN compliant vehicles here. If you want to import a vehicle into the US, it must comply with FMVSS. That normally requires extensive modification to the vehicle. I So don't worry, the UN it's going to start regulating your vehicles here in the US.
Europe and Australia have similar regulations. US regulations do not differ that much.
