The 6-spd with 3.42 is better than the old 4-spd with 4.10. First gear is shorter overall to get 5.3L into the powerband of 3000rpm+. The gears are space much closer than the 4-spd. Compared to his 4-spd 3.73, he'll go from 3 usable towing gears to 5, more time at 3000rpm in 4th than 4500rpm in 2nd.

GM introduced that 6-spd in 2009 crew cabs and 2010 extended cabs I believe. If you can find a 6.2L, awesome. They are rare in the half ton pickups.
