That 3:42 rear end is going to be dog compared to that 3:73. A 3:73 with the 6 speed transmission would be a real winner.
The 6-spd with 3.42 is better than the old 4-spd with 4.10. First gear is shorter overall to get 5.3L into the powerband of 3000rpm+. The gears are space much closer than the 4-spd. Compared to his 4-spd 3.73, he'll go from 3 usable towing gears to 5, more time at 3000rpm in 4th than 4500rpm in 2nd.

GM introduced that 6-spd in 2009 crew cabs and 2010 extended cabs I believe. If you can find a 6.2L, awesome. They are rare in the half ton pickups.
This makes me feel MUCH better! Here's to math!
I appreciate all the help. I think I'll pull the trigger on the 2013 1500. I'll post an update after my first tow just to help anyone who may follow this thread in the future.
I'm not so worried about payload after doing a little more math. Heck, maybe it will encourage me to trim up. Instead of thinking about "losing weight" I'll just think of it as "gaining payload" when I push the cheeseburger away. Ha!
Thanks again. This forum is never a let down!
