The newer 1500 will have much more power than your current truck. That extra 50 ft lbs of torque is a bunch, and will be noticeable! The newer 5.3 will do better mpg than old one.
If you may get a bigger trailer later, now is the time to go to the 2500. It will be a much more solid platform than the 1500. You will notice the rougher ride, and more fuel useage non-towing. I think towing mpg will not be a lot more with the 2500 6.0.
My 250 has heavy duty service suspension, like 350, and I enjoy driving it, even non-towing. It is not a daily driver.
Go test drive a 2500, see what you think!
