Thanks Chris for changing the photo links - I'm new on this board.
The insurance company is looking in to this and there conclusion is that is definitely a chemical reaction with the plastics. I also agree that this is not wide spread or GM would never sell another PU, that aside the problem is following the truck.
We live in a very rural part of NH (1 person per 27 acres)and it is mostly woodlots with very little agriculture so we have no spraying etc. in addition the problem has followed us from FL of that I am sure since I have photos of the truck before we left NH for Fl.
It is my belief that both the top and mirror are PVC and as pointed out is melted by organic compounds like acetone. We have had no body work done other than the bed liner which is aft of the mirror.
Does anyone know of a fluid that could leak from the engine or that might have been used in the truck assembly that has the organics necessary to melt the PVC?
While one might think that a spray is needed, if you could see the entire pattern of damage you would notice that it follows what you would expect the airflow to be over the truck at the surface from front to back.
The plan now is to replace the mirror and not the top and head south so we will see what happens. If I get lucky, which would be a turn of events, what ever is causing this will eventually go away (evaporate) and the damage will stop. In the meantime I hope it does not damage the rubber roof on the trailer or the vinyl in the awning. Does anyone know if the roof is PVC?
