It's not about length, but weight. The new 1 tons have much more available payload than even a few years back, thus you are right about the deciding point. Depending on the trailer you could go either way easily.
I did notice a difference in turns between my SRW and DRW, with the DRW not being pushed sideways. It was never dangerous, but you asked differences, and that was about it for me. Keep in mind that my 5th is nose heavy, and thus it would have more impact on the truck.
Obviously with an 8 ft you can haul more without leaving the gate down. But if you need the shorter bed to fit it in your garage, I wouldn't sweat the extra length. Just work out what you need.
