I know I’m going to need a 3500 series diesel truck to pull the 15,500 GVWR 5th wheel I’m looking at getting.
I would like to get a 4x4, 4 door single wheeled short bed (6.4) truck if all possible.
What are the advantages of duel WHEELS and an 8’ bed? Are they really necessary to haul a 38’ to 40’ 5th wheel?
Our one ton DRW trucks have up to a 9800 GVWR = 6500+ lbs payloads depending on truck selections.
Our one ton SRW GM/Ford trucks have a 7000-7050 RAWR and can carry up to 4000 lbs depending on truck selections and brands. The Ram with those big 12300 GVWR 7000 RAWR long box crew cab Cummins 4x4 shows up to 4400 lb payload.
A 15500 GVWR 5th wheel can have 3000-3300 lb of pin weight depending on floor plan.
Now add 250 lbs hitch/rails/hardware.
Add another 200-300 lbs for people.
Another 100 lbs of necessary junk in the truck.
This adds up to approx 3800-4000 lbs.
The one ton SRW will be maxed out at best.
The one ton DRW can have no problems with that size trailer.
Your choice but I would talks with your trucks dealers commercial sales mgr. Sometimes those folks are very up on weight issues much better than most car/trucks sales personnel.
