Skylights not roof vents

We cut shades out of pretty stiff cardboard and wrapped them in tin foil. Cut them so the would fit snug inside the framed opening.

Mine came with shades. They are attached at each end and you push or pull them to open/close them. They are regular pleated shades that fold as they close. Not sure where to buy them. I can't get a picture till next weekend because it is still in staorage.

Camco makes a shade but it's for the square roof vents. Wide enough but not long enough.

You might consider replacing them with smoked ones. Replacements are around 50 dollars. About what some cover would cost. Or for around 5 bucks a can of spray paint.

Dow 1" thick solid insulation. I painted mine and cut it to the appropriate size so that it fits snug , held in place by pressure. Keeps hot air out and cool air in.
If you need to add a little more security , so they don't fall out going 'bumpety-bump' while traveling, just add 3m sticky tabs or velcro tabs.

You can also use 2 sheets cut the same size and glued together. I cut a square 12" cutout and used clear plastic heat shrink storm window sheeting to fill the opening . It acts as a window to allow some light in, at the same time, keep the R value to insulate.

Reflectix sold in rolls of various widths and lengths at home building supply stores like Home Depot, Lowes, etc, works wonderfully for this application. Cut it to size with scissors and secure in place with Velcro.

I cut 2" foam to fit. It holds itself snug and pulls out easy. Cheap n easy fix for us.

x2 on the reflectix, and here's another way to hold it up if you like. I used some vinyl "j" channel (for vinyl siding). Cut to length, and using the existing screws, mount it to the skylight. The reflectix fits nicely in the j channel.

I'm hoping maybe some of you may have suggestions on what I can use to eliminte the excess heat. Summer is fast approaching and the heat in Florida can be overwhelming.

My first summer in Florida sent me running to the store to find 'anything' to cover the huge skylight in my RV to keep the blazing heat from coming in! :B

After several attempts here is what works!

"Removable" Limo Tint.
Key word here is 'removable'. Make sure you read the box carefully to make sure you are buying the 'removable' one.

Found at Walmart.

1. Cut to fit. Depending on the size of your skylight Yes you might have some seams but it doesn't matter.
2.Get a small spray bottle and mix dawn and water in it.
3.Spray the inside of the skylight 'liberally' with the soapy mixture.
4.Put tint up and squeegee it REAL good. To get out ALL the bubbles.

This unbelievably cut down on the heat coming in thru that gaping skylight!

I liked the results so much I added it to my big windows in the front of the coach. Again, it dropped the temps by 20 degrees inside!

I take the skylight tint down come cooler weather but I've left it on my coach windows. Going on 4 years now. Looks like a professional tint but with the option to take it off when ever you want. It just peels right off!

I also did the windows on my toad. What a difference it made. Dogs were really appreciative that I tinted the windows. That removable tint is going on 8 years now and it looks like the day I put it on.

My skylight wells are deep so I cut 4 inch thick foam over size and covered it will reflectrix. It has made a huge difference to both heat gain and heat loss.
