If it's a rack and pinion type, look at the square tubes at the outside. They often have hard plastic pucks mounted in the fixed housing that they slide into to guide those tubes. That's were they make a horendous squealing noise. It wont hurt anything but you can spray dry lube, which leaves a stain on the black tubes but works great, or you can use some parafin wax to rub and coat the area.
