Smaller Trailer Suggestions

Hi folks,

We're a fairly 'active' family of 4 that is very involved in kids sports, so we're not going to be using a trailer much throughout the year (likely 6 times per year).

We have a 2010 Ford F-150 that can tow just shy of 10,000lbs.

We went looking at trailers this past weekend and have narrowed down to 3 models and I'd LOVE to hear your thoughts/comments/warnings about these:

1. 2015 Viking 17BH - We really liked the layout of this model and the bunks for the kids. Sinks look normal (plenty of room for doing dishes and clean-up, etc.) and overall a good layout. Only real concern was the age/price of the unit - $18,000 and comes with a 90 day warranty as the unit is used.

2. 2017 Starcraft 19BHLE - All I can say about this was "wow". Small trailer with an amazing layout and quality workmanship. Only issue we saw was 'baby' sinks in the kitchen which means it's pretty much useless for doing anything with. Price was $20,000 (not bad for brand new) and comes with a 2 year warranty

3. 2017 Wildwood 201BHXL - Although this is the larger model, it's our least favorite as it appeared "cheap". One nice feature is this unit had an oven (not that that's a deal breaker) and the Murphy bed moves up and out of the way during the day, so there's more room to sit/read/etc. The big turn-off was how cheap this unit felt and compared to the other 2 units that were "loaded", everything here was an 'add-on' for more money. Price was $24,000 (plus all the extra's we'd need - A/C, etc.) and has a 1 year warranty.

I've done some research on-line on the three models and I'm seeing a lot of issues/recalls with Wildwood trailers, which is pushing this one to the lower end of our list unless the dealer is willing to negotiate and throw in the extras the other trailers had for free.

I'd love your opinions/thoughts on these 3 trailers... Have you ever owned one, what you thought of it, what you liked/disliked... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
  • I am really glad you posted. We are saving up for similar purchase. Almost pulled the trigger on Coachman 17 BH but it had no oven and a wall mount AC. Was not aware of the models you are considering. You are wise to research. Let us know what you decide
  • Prices seem high. Hmm, Victoria... are you in Canada? (There's a Victoria TX as well.) I saw a 19BHLE listed at a FL Camping World (not that I'm advocating them, mind you) for under $14K.
  • This is not one you asked about but if I were going to be looking at a small travel trailer I would seriously consider the Sonic line by Venture RV. We looked at them a couple of years ago and was quite impressed with the looks, quality and features.
Good luck with whatever you choose. :)

  • I typed a lengthy response, but it will only post short responses for me? Working on it.

Thanks - We've hummed and haw'd on the oven thing as well, but a friend of ours that lives the "RV lifestyle" (away nearly every weekend) says that he rarely (if ever) uses the oven. Most times he's using a BBQ outside.

The sink is an issue for my wife, as she's already stated that if we go with the Starcraft with the baby sink, then it means we're eating off of paper plates as there's no room to do dishes.

Yup, Victoria BC - welcome to the land where everything costs twice as much as anywhere else...

Thanks for the tip on the Sonic line - I've never heard of them! Turns out when I do their dealer search, the nearest one is in Mt. Vernon WA - a ways away for us (equivalent of traveling from Idaho to Colorado)...

If we went with a sonic, we'd need a larger trailer for the bunks... Otherwise they look like a solid choice...
  • Check out some of the Rockwood Mini Lite floor plans. Personally, I love a front Murphy bed. Nice couch during the daytime. If you can afford it, get a dinette slide out. You will love the extra space.
