If you like Cooper, you might look at the M+S winter tire. I know many that have had one of its variations over the last 20 years, all have liked it. At least from a western Washington warm wet slushy snow situation. it has enough sipes, that in a colder harder region it should do well too!
I personally do not like studs, for the mentioned damage to the road surface. Also here in the Seattle area, it is not icy enough, or hard compacted snow enough days to warrant having studs for the little extra traction the studs give you. I'll go for the dry/rain wetted traction over the icy part of the equation, as that is 80=90% of the winter driving here at least.
