98 Prowler. From what ive been reading the roof is a EPDM rubber roof. These roofs are in two layers, a top white layer and a bottom black layer. Its looking to me like the white layer is about 80%+ gone. Im considering coating it in Liquid Roof. Is that a wise decision? So far there are no leaks, any idea from this point how long I could put off fixing/coating the roof?If I were to go to an rv shop and have them replace the EPDM roof with a new one any idea of the average cost for such a repair?

If there are no major tears, get up there, clean it, recaulk everything, and resurface yourself...use all Dicor products.....

You can use Liquid Roof or its twin Liquid Rubber that is a tad lower in selling price.Your roof being black is a NON issue to keeping your RV dry for another 20 years of you keep all the seams sealed with Eternabond, etc.Keep in mind 99.9% of roof areas covered with EPDM rubber is done with BLACK. White it only a thin finish to help reflect some of the sun's energy. It does not make the roof last longer. EPDM in black or any other color is very UV resistant by design.Again black is just fine for keeping an RV dry. If you are going to used Liquid Rubber or its twin I strongly suggest you deal all of your seams and openings with Web Seal version of Eternabond so you have them addressed for the next 35 years. It is glass backed and needs to be coated anyway.Shops around here charge around $100+ per running foot of the RV length if there is NO water damage to address.

Roof seems in good shape just all the desert sun has worn the white off. My plan is to redo all the seals in dicor and eternabond. So your saying that just because the black is exposed now that doesn't mean the roof is on its way out? I could wait to seal the roof and the black should keep me dry for awhile longer?

It looks like the water has even gotten under the metal strip and stained the lower edge of the strip.Larry

I replaced the roof on my 32' 95 Jayco at the campground in Havasu over a couple weekends. Most time was spent removing the old roof. Fellow campers seemed absolutely fascinated by the project, as well as a little worried when their time came. All in all it was a pretty easy and strait forward job. I used the 60mil kit from This Guy. Came with everything you need to complete the job. It's a great time to replace roof vents and maybe add a fantastic vent if you don't already have one.

If you are looking to put trailer on site for a season, get it in place, cut a tarp the perfect size, use some lath around the perimeter to hold the tarp and just use it....I am afraid a trailer like yours in its condition will not have much value in the sale or trade dept.......the tarp will buy you some time, then when and if you decide, down the road you can do a roof the right way.....do a search for your trailer, see how much they are going for, probably not much more than the cost of a new roof......good luck..

Thats what im worried about though. Look how much black rubber came off when I scrubbed it. Im worried theres gonna be nothing left. Whatever is left certainly isn't going to be a solid surface for the liquid rubber to adhere to or do you think it will still be solid enough assuming I dont rub through any of the rubber. I think it's always a shock when someone first cleans rubber. I'm guessing that you are using a butyl cleaner with a lot of strength. Dilute the cleaner and it will pick up less rubber.

To illustrate to yourself that the type of removal you experienced isn't that abnormal, try your cleaner on a tire and see what you get. I bet you will see the same result on your rag.

Just clean it, tape it, paint it, and then enjoy it for the years it has left in it.

For the use you are planning for the trailer, I would do exactly as I posted earlier. The age and condition of it precludes spending very large sums of money to fix it. It probably needs a complete re-roof, including plywood and rafters. It may very well need work on the sides and ends also. In my opinion, it is not worth the time, money, and effort.
Just clean it, tape it, paint it, and then enjoy it for the years it has left in it.
This is what I would do.
