So Long

Sorry to see you go, DJ -- so don't. As TCer emeritus, you'll always be welcome here.

DJ, don't despair -- with a little careful handling, you can still get your trailer into some reasonably remote places. Idaho seems to be ground zero for world-class boondocking. We were on the Salmon River, south of Stanley, in September -- the trailer is in the lower right corner of the photo:

Admittedly, it is not the same as taking a TC onto a boulder-strewn goat track scratched into the side of a crumbling cliff, but it is not bad!

Happy Trails to you. This is a sweet-sour thread for me. I don't think you are gone from the forum, just headed another direction. You have too much invested to drop us. You will just liven up the trailer forum with your ace in the hole: you know more than they do about hard core four wheel drive. One thing certain is change. If you are on this forum long enough you see people coming and going in an arhythmic pattern. I'm already in the, 'get-rid-of-stuff' mode myself. The Jeep CJ-8 is gone. Our Chrysler 300M is going strong, as is Jeanie's mother who was 100 years old last week. We only keep the Chrysler around because it's the only car we own that she can get into. But, it will eventually be gone. I delayed getting a new truck camper as I'm just going to try to squeeze a few more years out of it before it goes to the landfill and I follow different pursuits. Yep, time marches on whether we're their or not.
Good luck with your new RV. It looks like a well thought out rig to me.

Congrats on TT.. We did same thing buying a new TT for our long seasonal stays now. I lasted a year and bought another TC. Best of both worlds now. Nice Arctic fox!

Spend some time in a T@B before you buy. We rented one years ago thinking that it was what we wanted. After the week was up we knew it was not for us. I am about 5'10" and I couldn't stand up straight in the T@B. Some other issues about overall size as well. Not saying don't buy, just saying be carefull with your purchase.

You can take the TC away but the TC thought process will remain! When we go off in the trailer, more often than not we do things the TC way, not so much the other way around.
I have enjoyed your trip reports and you insight into many of the problems posted by others.

I feel your pain. I sold my AF 990 camper and replaced it with an AF 27-5L. I do miss my camper in many ways, but don't miss it in the ways you mention. We DO love the 27-5L along with the much easier hook up and go qualities! It has been a great camper for our "glamping" trips, but we do miss some of those off-road journeys we had more often when we had the TC. We considered getting a Northstar camper, but then realized the hassle it would be removing the fifth wheel hitch and truck box everytime we wanted to boondock. So, we are in the process of buying a T@B with the Outback axle for those "out-in-the-weeds" trips. We did consider the new Airstream basecamp, but the T@B seemed to fit the need just as well and was significantly cheaper.

Well heck, that's sure bad timing from where I sit. I shoulda been here in Idaho years ago. I'm thinking if you swing that TT axle upside down you can still four wheel camp! We'll see you again soon DJ.
