I think I used an 1 1/8" socket too but long term it's probably best to use the proper metric socket. It gives me an excuse to go to the local tool depot.... :B
When I changed the original filter at the engine the housing cap was so tight I was certain something was going to break. I used a much more reasonable torque when tightening it so hopefully it will not be so nasty the next time.
