The battery is not really bypassed, but the charger might be smart enough to know there is no battery. But regardless of whether there is a battery present, the 12 volts that run most of the trailer comes from the charger. So if the charger dies, the rest of the 12 volt appliances just drain down the battery until it's dead as you're experiencing.
The battery was sitting at home on the bench. The short drive home from storage on Syunday must have given it a little bit of a charge. I'll disconnect it and charge it and see what happens - thanks everyone for the input.
