We do lock the camper while traveling down the road. I used to just lock the handle until one trip the door came open while going down the road. Now we use the deadbolt all the time.
While we are at the campground we never lock the door. We've never had any issues but we mainly visit state parks.
BTW, we locked the keys in our last camper while at home once. Using a coat hanger it took about 5 minutes to unlatch the emergency window on the side and climb in. So, even locking the camper won't help much.
