Spare tire age

So, what is your opinion on how old would you trust your spare? My spare is the original 2003 that came on the truck. I've read lots of opinions on other sites but thought I would check with the most knowledgeable, Truck Camper people :B.

Also, I have put 265/75/16's on the factory wheels. The spare is a 245/75/16. I don't think it would be wise to run different size tires on the rear with my G80 locking differential. Is my thinking correct??

Thanks in advance

  • Most experts say to replace it when you buy new tires . Use to rotate the spare with the other tires but most people don't do that nowadays I'd replace it with the right size tire your using .
  • I had a problem with one of my rear tires at Crater Lake, I changed to my spare a 265/70/17, my other rear was a 315/70/17. I drove it about 100 miles to the next large town, not able to find a 315, I stopped at a rest area and put the 265 on the front and the front 315 on the rear, I then drove home about 1,000 miles. This is the original 2003 spare and we did this in July 2013, spare was fine always in the shade
  • Does the manufacturer date say that it is an 03'? It might be even older. A spare is a safety net for emergencies. Your safety net has large holes in it.
  • Replace it. If the original looks OK, sell it on Craigslist. someone will buy it
  • FWIW: I swap out my 5'er and truck spare with a new spare every 5 years. Just had new spare's mounted in Jan.

Happy camping!!! See y'all down the road!!!:)
