You could always upgrade to lockout hubs like the Spyntechs and use the stock spare.
With the ability to disconnect the axles, a smaller size tire on 1 side won't damage anything.
A differential will handle the difference in tire size, unless there is a locker.
Running different size tires on the front axle is a steering nightmare, and adds a bit of workload.
If your carry an undersized spare and the front gets a flat the recommended method is to put the spare on the rear and move the rear to the flat location.
I think the hubs might be a little out of my price range, but would be a nice option. I researched having the smaller spare tire very well and came to the conclusion that running it on the front or rear would not harm the differential as the front has no locker and the rear is limited slip (this all assuming I drive carefully and don't break the tires loose :) )
When I got the flat it was on a rear wheel. What I decided to do was put the good tire on the rear and the worn out smaller spare on the front. I made this decision because of the sheer weight on the rear axle. I did not notice any driving differences with the small wheel on the steer axle. There was only approx 1" overall height difference between the 265 and 285 tire.
I have driving some short trips with the camper and the larger spare underneath now and there does not appear to be any rubbing. I am much closer with the camper weight, but looks like it is going to work for me. Thanks again to all the comments.
