Hi DirtyOil - if you take two Ram diesel 3500's with identical final drive gearing, manual trans, 18 inch tires - one dual rear wheel and one single rear wheel, what would the fuel economy difference be on 50% loaded rv haul work?
06Fargo... honestly, I couldn't tell you never had much use for a dually, wheels tend to fall off them on oilfield roads/trails. As for the hand shaker would love to have one, but, when I was working oilfields had too many short hops, a lot of stop and goes...afraid I would have worn out a clutch or two.
Not much danger in wearing out the clutch if using the proper gear starting out. If I am driving solo I almost always start out in 2nd unless I'm on a really steep hill. If I have the trailer on I always start out in 1st to go easy on the clutch, but it isn't long and the truck is begging for 2nd! Like I said before, I believe it takes a manual transmission to make one really appreciate the low end torque the Cummins really has!
the type of work I was doing running from well to well, drive 40-50km stop at a number of well sites... drive 20 or 30km check a few more sites...some of the roads were basically goat trails lots of mud/snow...seen guys burn clutches out. Then there was the time this last Feb.. where I broke through the ice had water just below rocker panels.(ice bridge)
I currently have 98400km on truck... not even broke in yet! :B
