Hi ol' grouch -
The 6 speed manual in our Dodge Cummins is a pain in the a$$ except when on the open road. Then it is beauty. 5th (direct) is just under 50mph to just over 60mph, road gear is 1900 rpm at 65mph. After 1st 2 to 6 are nice even steps.
Works super nice with the exhaust brake.
1st dual mass flywheel cratered at 90K miles. Replaced with solid flywheel and new clutch kit. That one ran 95K miles. Pilot bearing failed. Caught before the input shaft was beyond repair. Total of parts for 2 clutches about $1800.00. We did the work on a hoist available to us.
We have a GMC diesel Allison in the project line up - when the Allison failed diagnosis was quick and easy - we picked up the warm metal parts off the highway and loaded the truck on a flatbed and hauled it home. Probly will be $2.5 to $3K to get back on the road. At least 200K on that trans maybe more. It sure works nice in stop and go and hayfield work. It sure blew up good and proper.
If the Daimler Mercedes-Benz ZF Zeppelin 6 speed ever breaks in the Dodge there will be an Allison or Fuller conversion. OEM trans is quoted at $6000 for a reman and $12000 for a new one. That is a lot of beer and pizza. You can buy an Eaton Reman Fuller 1850 torque 18 speed with 3 year warranty in town for $4700...
