My upper SL were in constant contact w/ aux springs which makes for very harsh unloaded ride as you mentioned. Called TL and they said it was okay to cut/trim as needed but gave an initial suggestion of 1/2". So I used a jigsaw with them still in place and fair success. Bought a 4 1/2" grinder which worked better, but more messy job. Still may have to cut more off the rears as they are touching w/ full fuel tank. Wasn't when I did it, but truck wasn't level either. I have about 1/4" to 1/2" w/ the fronts and try to have the same for the rears.
Word of caution if you use cut off/grinder with them on truck: wear leather gloves, long sleeve shirt you don't care about and safety glasses. The melted rubber got all over the grinder and now have to figure out what to use to remove it from it.
