Standard vs long bed

I'm looking to purchase a truck that will eventually be needed to pull a 5'er and would prefer to get a standard length bed (6'4") for reasons I won't go into here, but wanted the forum's opinion about this.

I know there are sliding type hitches available for this purpose, but basically I am curious about how reliable and easy to use the sliding type of 5th wheel hitches are and if people who have pulled 5'ers with standard bed trucks have had any problems related to the size of the bed.

Thanks!

  • If you are pulling a fifth wheel with a modern rounded corner front cap, then you most likely can get by with a standard hitch. You may need to be more alert when trying to do an extreme 90 degree truck to fifth wheel maneuver however.

Otherwise you just give up storage space in the truck bed when you get a short bed truck.
