After re-reading these posts this is what I would do for the long Alaska trip you want to do.
I think the simplest solution is to just take 2 vehicles.
You state you already have a small van. Put most of your gear plus a driver and 2 others in that. This will allow you to only have 3 people and 'some' gear in your tow vehicle, keeping the weight down. Or put 4 people in the van to cut the weight further..
I know a second vehicle will add fuel costs but I think the plus's outweigh the negatives.
- Everyone will have personal space during the trip and you will not need to buy a different tow vehicle.
- You will have an additional vehicle on hand for exploring in case not everyone wants to visit the same place at the same time.
- You can also leave the TV hooked up to the camper during those short overnight stops and use the van to visit a grocery store, etc.
- You will have an emergency vehicle on hand in case of a breakdown.
Give each driver one of those 'family radios' that have a range of several miles so you can coordinate stops and you're good to go.
When you get back from the big trip you will have a real good idea of whether or not you really need a new TV. Maybe you can get along just fine in the future with this current set-up.
My family used to camp this way. I would pull the camper and my wife would pull the jet-ski. We each had one of our kids with us. It worked very well.
Good Luck.
