Steens mountain is really neat. There is a campground at fish lake. Be sure to give yourself enough time to drive the loop road. The views from the top are amazing and looking into Kiger Gorge and off the east face is breathtaking. Depending on winter snow pack you may not be able to get up there until mid-June or early July if it gets real deep. I've snowmobiled up there on Memorial weekend before. Its definitely worth the trip to see it. A drive down the center patrol road of the Malheur refuge is another site while your in the area to see the wildlife. Check out diamond craters and the Malheur wildlife refuge headquarters to the north if you'll be in the area. Page springs campground near Frenchglen is another nice campground at the west side of Steens mountain where the loop road begins. It's along the blitzen river and makes a nice base camp for exploring the area. Have fun!
