Thanks for all the replies.
We took 58 days for our Alaska trip in 2005 and drove over 13,000 miles.
I guess why we would not go all the way again is that is BC and Alberta we: saw MORE bears* and other animals, found the roads to be better, still saw glaciers in Canada, still saw great mountains, had better access to facilities, would not have to drive as far again, could whale watch from BC ... *We could have paid a lot of extra money to fly over to see the bears, but it was too costly for us.
There just doesn't seem to be anything Alaska has to offer that we couldn't find in BC/Alberta (Denali excluded).
We did take our time on the trip rarely driving over 250 miles in a day. We did see Denali in full blue skies on two separate days, but not on the day we took the bus trip to Wonder Lake.
We did stop at Banff and Jasper on the way up, three days each. We liked Jasper better.
Someone said they have done the trip a couple of times with no problems. We also did not have a problem, but we did see several windshields cracked or with holes in them, specially on class-A rigs.
As for the fishing, I can't say anything about that, but we did witness "combat fishing" along some river one day. Defined to us as when the banks are lined with fishermen. We saw Bob Dole walking back from that river. Took us a little while to place his face.
