Storing Propane Tanks

I could not find any posts on this so I thought I would ask. I have to store my RV at a location other than my property. I was considering taking the propane tanks and storing in my garage. Does anyone do this or is it a bad idea?

Thanks
  • I have several hazardous/flammable tanks/containers in my shop/garage, including-

    propane
    acetylene
    oxygen
    butane
    mapp gas
    gasoline
    diesel
    kerosene
    white gas
    acetone
    denatured alcohol
    laquer thinner
    paint thinner
    mineral spirits
    spray paint
    wood stain
    motor oil
    tranny fluid
    gear oil
    WD-40
    other various lubricating oils
    other various cleaning products

There have also been cars/trucks, motorcycles, atv's, generators, chain saw, etc, that have gasoline or gas/oil mix in their fuel tanks and cabuerators, parked or kept in the garage at various times.

This includes the previous places I've lived, as well as the current place.

Several years now and I haven't blown the place up yet :)
  • I have spare LPG cylinders in my garage. One trailer complete with LPG cylinders spends every winter in my garage. I also have about 30 gallons of gasoline in my garage in drums and jugs. But then on the other hand I also have fuel tanks in both vehicles which are in, wait for it, my garage! Oh, I forgot, I also have acetylene tanks in my garage.

My garage is detached from the house, I would be less comfortable if the garage was attached but would still use it as a garage!

If you are uncomfortable putting them in the garage, maybe take them off of the tongue and put them inside the RV out of sight.
  • If you decide to remove the tanks for storage, then you need to somehow seal the hoses on the TT.
You need to keep dirt etc. from finding it's way into the hoses.
  • don't know about your part of the country but the meth heads steal them as they use it in the manufacture of meth. friends of mine had his stolen and my friends who are wheat farmers post guards at night since they have had propane and fertilizer stolen
  • I used to take my tanks off and bring them home until I got the mod off of this site to drill a hole in the large wing nut handle holding the two tanks down and put a padlock through it,, Keeps the honest crooks from swiping them,, but if they want them they will cut the hold down frame or the threaded rod,, I have a slight piece of mind,,, Also,, two tanks and a hold down frame should be covered by insurance if they steal it,,, hopefully!!!
  • If you're storing your RV in a location you think theft is a possibility, yes remove the tanks. If theft is not an issue, it does not hurt to leave the tanks on OR take them off the camper and bring them home. If you do leave them on the camper, make sure you turn the tank knobs completely off so you won't have any leak and next time you use the tank it might be empty.

You could also store the tanks inside the camper if you don't want to bring them home.
  • Propane tanks should NEVER be stored inside a building! It is a safety hazard. Should a tank leak, and they occasionally do, you have a very hazardous gas in that room, even though it is a garage.
  • Definitely take your tanks home if there is a chance of theft but you definitely shouldn't put them in your garage. They need to be stored outdoors or in a tool shed.
  • How secure is the storage area? Other than the risk of theft, I can't think of any reason to remove the tanks.
  • Mine is in outside storage 30 miles from my home, my propane tanks stay with the camper.
